Laboratory performance is only one part of the equation. The product also has to solve a real customer problem, operate reliably in its intended environment, and be manufactured and delivered at a viable cost.

Physical components have material costs, manufacturing lead times, supply-chain constraints, and safety requirements. Moving without sufficient technical discipline can increase both cost and development time.

Early technoeconomic analysis can identify whether improvements in efficiency, durability, cost, scale, or operating performance are sufficient to create a competitive product—or whether resources should be directed elsewhere.

Without that boundary, engineering teams can continue improving, adding features, and refining performance long after they have reached what the customer and market actually require.
